As a weekly, community-focused newspaper, we are dedicated to telling the stories that matter most to our readers — from local government and school board coverage to high school sports, features on local residents, and community events.
We are looking for a dedicated, multi-talented Multimedia Reporter to join our small and passionate team.
Position Summary:
This is a hands-on, versatile role ideal for someone who enjoys community journalism and isn’t hesitant to pitch in where needed. The successful candidate will be responsible for researching and writing stories, covering local events and meetings, photographing assignments, and helping lay out pages using Adobe InDesign. This position also includes occasional assistance with print shop jobs and helping cover the front office.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cover a wide range of community news, including local government, schools, sports, events, and human interest features.
- Write clear, accurate, and engaging articles for both print and digital publication.
- Attend and report on city council, county board, and school board meetings.
- Take high-quality photos to accompany stories or for standalone photo pages.
- Prepare articles and photos for publication using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
- Assist with page layout and proofing for the weekly edition.
- Help with in-house design and print shop jobs (e.g., newsletters, programs, flyers) as time allows.
- Assist with front office duties such as answering phones, greeting customers, and handling walk-in print orders or newspaper inquiries when needed.
- Contribute to social media and website updates.
Requirements:
- Strong writing, reporting, and photography skills.
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign (required).
- Basic photo editing skills using Adobe Photoshop.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt in a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Availability for occasional evening or weekend assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a community or weekly newspaper setting.
- Knowledge of Iron County or willingness to quickly learn about the area.
- Friendly, professional demeanor for interacting with the public.
- Experience with customer service or office support is a plus.
